Vancouver based deejay- turned-producer, U-Tern, is one of Canada’s best kept musical secrets. This fact is respected as true, amongst those fortunate enough to collaborate with this rising producer. A widely-recognized heavy-hitter in the Vancouver hip-hop circle, U-Tern has produced tracks for internationally acclaimed artists Devin the Dude, Moka Only, Swollen Members, Sweat Shop Union, Josh Martinez, and others.

Heavily influenced by early-era funk and hip-hop acts, and equally inspired by contemporary electronic artists such as Daft Punk, U-Tern brings a uniquely “futuristic-while-vintage” sound. U-Tern’s sound has been cultivated over 10 years of DJ’ing, supported by an exhaustive record collection and musical knowledge, and years of musical study.

In 2007 U-Tern received worldwide attention with his club-friendly remixes of “Set Your Flag On Fire”, and “White Gurl”, released on his electro-boogie EP, “Body Work – Volume 1”. U-Tern’s first vinyl release, the EP quickly sold out and gained him heavy rotation in both the club and radio play lists of many like-minded DJ’s the world over.

In 2007 U-Tern also launched a regularly pod cast internet radio show, “One Day Later”. Archived and broadcast from www.brooklynradio.net, the show has steadily grown its listenership, while serving as a touch stone and a scratch pad where U-Tern can experiment, and reach out to growing fan base.

With many projects and releases planned, including remixes for Major Lazers, Ok Go, San Serac, 7 songs on an upcoming EA video game and an EP with fellow producer/musician Neighbour, 2009 is promising to be another busy year for U-Tern.

When a group of cottontop tamarins were played a variety of tunes, from classical to jazz, only songs by thrash metal outfit Metallica made them react.

But rather than making them agitated or aggressive, the heavy tracks had a soothing effect, Psychology Professor Charles Snowdon, of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, found.

Dr Snowdon, who teamed up with National Symphony Orchestra cellist David Teie, also played the monkeys tunes composed specifically for them.

Although they enjoyed Metallica, they were much more interested in these pieces.

A melody based on the short calls of scared monkeys led to anxiety levels soaring, while one based on long calls the creatures make when they are happy had a calming effect.

The pair also found monkeys use tone and pitch to express emotions.

Dr Snowdon told the Royal Society Journal Biology Letters: "My talking does not necessarily tell you about my emotional state.

"When I add extra elements, change the tone of voice, the rhythm, pitch or speed, that is where the emotional content is contained.

"Monkeys interpret rising and falling tones differently than humans. Oddly, their only response to several samples of human music was a calming response to the heavy-metal band Metallica."

He said human babies are also able to interpret tone and pitch.

"We use legato - long tones - with babies to calm them. We use staccato to order them to stop," he said.

"Approval has a rising tone, and soothing has a decreasing tone. We add musical features to speech so it will influence the affective state of a baby. If you bark out 'PLAY WITH IT' a baby will freeze."
